Chevron in South Africa markets its products under the Caltex brand, one of South Africas top four petroleum brands. Caltex was created in 1936 as a joint venture between Standard Oil Co. of California and the Texas Co., with each having equal ownership. The brand has operated in Asia, Africa and the Middle East as a committed energy provider ever since. With the merger of Chevron and Texaco in October 2001, Caltex became part of the ChevronTexaco family. In a move to present a clear, strong and unified presence in the global marketplace, ChevronTexaco Corporation changed its name to Chevron Corporation in May 2005. Early imports of paraffin would take between 3 to 4 months from the time of the order to delivery in Cape Town, arriving in packs of two 5-gallon tins packed in strong wooden boxes. Petrol was first sold from handcarts in tins, and later in steel drums, with hand pumps used to fill motor vehicles tanks. Caltex Oil South Africa has been recognized for the introduction of many “firsts”, the most notable of which was the establishment of the first filling station in Sea Point, Cape Town.
