Chevron in South Africa markets its products under the Caltex brand, one of South Africas top four petroleum brands. Caltex was created in 1936 as a joint venture between Standard Oil Co. of California and the Texas Co., with each having equal ownership. The brand has operated in Asia, Africa and the Middle East as a committed energy provider ever since. With the merger of Chevron and Texaco in October 2001, Caltex became part of the ChevronTexaco family. Early imports of paraffin would take between 3 to 4 months from the time of the order to delivery in Cape Town, arriving in packs of two 5-gallon tins packed in strong wooden boxes. Petrol was first sold from handcarts in tins, and later in steel drums, with hand pumps used to fill motor vehicles tanks.
