Piza E Vino Melville
Piza e Vino in Melville is a funky restaurant befitting the quirky nature of Melville itself. The restaurant is part of a successful franchise, which opened its first restaurant in Melrose Arch in 2009. Since then, the uncomplicated menu, unpretentious wine menu and exceptionally friendly and efficient service and overall popularity with diners have seen it expand to other parts of Johannesburg.
The Melville store is situated in a lovely old, characterful building and the restaurant fills a number of small rooms which spill out onto a beautiful garden. The décor in this eatery, as with all of them, is warm, inviting and modern. One of the things most notable too, is the playfulness in the design. Piza e Vino is, after all, a place of surprises, and you will be pleased by the touches of ‘crazy’ which make appearances throughout the restaurant. The signature quirk of Piza e Vino joints is the yellow mosaicked pizza oven adorned, ‘biker style’, with roses and swallows, which plays out interestingly with the traditional fireplace which is still used on chilly nights.
To complement this funky, friendly restaurant vibe, is a simple yet mouth-watering menu, which is unsurprisingly dominated by pizza and pasta that fuses traditional Italian and South African flavours. There are pizzas with fun names such as the Parma Verace (prosciutto crudo & fresh rocket) and ones with droolicious toppings like the Piza V (balsamic roasted cherry tomatoes, mozzarella and fresh basil). There is also a wide variety of anitpastas and salads. There are plenty of options for vegetarians too as well as a separate child-friendly menu.
All of the ingredients are sourced locally and a big emphasis is put on organic and humanely-produced food sources.
