If you are in this category of persons, cantact us for the details.Ask your waiter for the special prices applicable for that day.We were invited as a group to Wing-Hin Chinese Restaurant because we’ve been regulars and have always loved their food. They also chose the dishes served and according to our English-speaking Chinese waiter, these dishes were the most popular ones in the restaurant.
Interesting, because none of us had ever had Peking duck – but staying ignorant isn’t an option.
We started with chicken sweetcorn soup (R15) followed by chicken springrolls (R15) – almost a complete meal on their own – and we had barely started. The main dishes of the night included Peking duck R198 for the whole duck, which will easily feed six people); salt and pepper prawns (R84 – again, enough for six people), spicy sauce chicken (R36); and a whole steamed red fish – delicately flavoured and something quite extraordinary.
But let’s start with the Peking duck. It was very different from what we expected. It’s quite a process to make it, and the taste is glorious, but something quite unexpected. Don’t think sweet.
This was quite fresh, cut in pieces and served with small pancakes as well as carrots and celery.
Everything is packed into the pancake and folded into a square by the diner. Again, delicate is the word that pops into my mind. I loved it and thought it was very different from any duck I had tasted before. In the cooking process, the skin is steamed in way that separates it from the rest of the meat, which allows for a very unusual taste.
The chicken, as well as the prawns, were superb and, again with the fish, there’s no other word than delicate. The meal concluded with banana and apple fritters with ice cream.
Do yourself a favour. If you haven’t tried this Chinese spot, it’s worth the effort.
